**Message to ESOL 3**

1/ 19/10

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Over the next 10 weeks, our students will study the critically acclaimed novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.  This realistic novel is set in the pre-Civil Rights Era in Alabama and, thus, it contains insensitive language and stereotypes that depict this era in American history.  Our students also will study historical documents that will help them understand the author’s approach in writing about the injustices of this time period.

The unit has been designed to provide considerable support so that students are prepared to read and comprehend the text with a deep level of understanding.  Our study of To Kill a Mockingbird will require students to complete a minimum of 30 minutes of homework most nights.  Homework assignments will include---but not limited to---reading and writing independently.  The importance of your son’s/daughter’s completion of assignments must be stressed.  Students who keep pace with the reading and writing will be successful in the class.

Thank you in advance for your continued cooperation and involvement in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hurley
